Interpretation of 'The Old Man and The Sea'

The most noteworthy tendency of Hemingway’s novel is his STYLE. In the novel ‘The Old man and The Sea’ one marked feature of Hemingway’s distinguished style is the technique of ‘Interior Monologue.’ It is an expression of character’s thoughts, feelings, and impressions in a narrative. Hemingway uses much interior monologue for Santiago as he ventures out alone on the sea. Santiago’s thoughts provide a running commentary on “what is going on" outside on the sea. We are constantly made aware of "what is going on" in the old man’s mind. For instances,
1.    “He is a great fish and I must convince him, he thought.”
2.    “What I will do if he decides to go down, I don’t know. What I’ll do if he sounds and dies I don’t know. But I’ll do something. There are plenty of things I can do.”
3.    “I cannot be too far out now, he thought.”

Continuous amount of lines with the words “he thought”, “do it old man” provide an acute example of interior monologue.
Very often the old man thinks aloud and even talks with a bird and a fish. At that time his “state of mind” is discovered.

“You better be fearless and confident yourself, old man.”
“How old are you?” the old man asked the bird. “Is this your first trip? ...
“Take a good rest, small bird” he said.

As in Hamlet it is pointed out that the conscience provides strength at the same time it makes us coward also. In the same way the old man throughout the novel communicates with his own self and attempts to win the battle of life through it…

What is literature?

In whatever way we retain the controversy as to the exact definition of literature commences. The moment that the question is raised our difficulties begin and mostly there is no room for discussion and it remains unanswered. For years scholars and critics have tried to define literature and everyone has their own view point. However they agree at one point that Literature is closely associated with life and of general human interest with two-fold characteristic of pleasure and preaching. In my observation, literature is something like…
Taking Slice-of-life + adding imagination and creativity into it = approaching towards some new transformation regarding that.
Literature is somewhat like dream because whatever we cannot do in reality we try to portray it through our imagination in literature however this process does not only limited to that but also goes one step ahead to it. It also tries to bring out some innovative solution; either of rising arms against that situation or to change and challenge it or to raise questioning spirit etc. this is what something new that literature does and plays very vital role in human life. Hence we always find it interesting.

ROLE OF PLACENENT IN EVALUATING ROLE OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

Modern era is the time of calculation. People think about consequences and results prior to whatever they do. Nowadays educational institutes are evaluated on the basis of what “guarantee” (placement) they offer.
Education + placement = top-quality institute
At that point the question confronts in our mind that what role placement plays in evaluating the role of educational institutes. Answer can be given in either ways. On one hand the institutes that offer placements are considered advanced because they provide surety of future, at the same time, the students need not have to wait in queue in the job market and can cultivate their learning. However, while providing this facility with education, there is a risk of shift of perspective. Education institute may cease to be educational and turns out to be business firm which signs “a bond” with the students that if they remain there, there will be the scope of their job. Hence its prime objective is distracted somewhere.
On the whole, placement can be one of the ways to evaluate educational institute but it is not the chief or the only means to judge. The principal objective of educational institute should be education. Either they provide placement or not they should provide that education which leads them to get placement.
